Prior to entering the Surgical Technologist program, April was in the US Navy and a Probation Oficer and Gang Specialist in Richmond, VA. She holds degrees in both Criminology and Forensic Science. Wanting to expand her knowledge of human anatomy and physiology drove April to join the Program at GLIT and take a new direction in her professional life.
Two months after completing her externship in Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, April was hired by Wilcox Memorial Hospital located on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii. The hospital serves the Island inhabitants and tourists alike.
April explains her shock and surprise by being hired by such a distant hospital. "I just saw the ad for a scrub tech while I was web-browsing late at night. I never in a million years thought I would actually get called back for a job in Hawaii." One of the things April loves is that the hospital serves such a rural area, all the scrubs are expected to learn every surgery that is performed. “I like that so much because I never get bored. One day I'm doing a total knee and the next I'm in a radical neck dissection. At Wilcox we are a small community of professionals. We share the same locker rooms and break rooms as the surgeons. There is no division here. We are a team."
April says, completing the program at GLIT totally changed my life. “Because of the great education I received there, I literally live in paradise. I get to drive by waterfalls and see the ocean up close every day on my drive to work. I am currently learning to surf and snorkel. I have learned the Hawaiian tradition of paddling canoes in the ocean. This is the best time in my family's life. Thanks to GLIT for giving me the tools to live my dreams!”
