In this Alumni Spotlight we caught up with Roxana Rodriguez, Medical Assistant graduate who currently works at Orthopedic & Sports Medicine of Erie-UPMC.
What where you doing prior to enrollment? What made you enroll in school?
I was a stay at home mom.
Where have you worked since you graduated and where do you currently work? What is your title?
I started at Hand & Microsurgery Orthopedics LLC and now I currently work at
Orthopedic & Sports Medicine of Erie-UPMC as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant/ Cast Technician.
What types of things do you do there day to day?
My days usually begin by finding out what providers I will be working with. Once I know, I prep the exam rooms and stock all supplies, clean the rooms, pre-draw any injections for the day & pre-chart patients that might need accommodations. I also do casting and splinting in my office. I will look through the schedule for any patients that might need a cast when they come into the office.
What do you like about your career?
I believe every role in healthcare is vital. The best thing about my career is watching my patients heal and guiding them through the whole process.
What did you like most about attending Great Lakes? How did Great Lakes prepare you for your job?
I liked the shorter hours and the hands-on assignments.
What advice can you give current students and new graduates that can help them be successful?
Work Hard!! No matter what life throws at you, it’s important to stay focused on the end goal. Pay attention to everything your instructors teach you.
