Recently the veterinary assistant students were invited to Curtis Dairy Farm in Wattsburg, PA. They were welcomed by the owners who gave them a personalized tour of the farm. The students learned all that it takes to keep a dairy farm up and running; from feeding times to the overhead costs in maintaining the cows and barns.
Each cow has their own name and number; this way farmers are able to keep track of their daily routines. The farmers milk the cows two times a day, bright and early at 6:00 AM and then again in the evening. The dairy cows are also responsible for reproducing female calf\’s, the owner of the farm is in charge of artificially inseminating the female cow. He explained the process in detail; it was fascinating and interesting to hear.
The trip sparked some interest in a few of the students who perhaps may enter the field of farming when they complete their education. We would like to thank Curtis Dairy Farm for always welcoming our students and taking the time out of their day to educate others … it was an absolute beautiful day to visit a dairy farm!
